Do You Know Where Your Beef Comes From? Why Buying Direct From a Rancher Matters

There has been a lot of conversation about beef in the United States lately.

Beef prices remain a concern for families. Cattle supplies are tight. Beef imports are making headlines. And new federal action has focused attention on increasing the amount of imported lean beef entering the U.S. market in an effort to increase ground beef supply and provide some relief for consumers.

There are plenty of opinions about whether increasing imports is the right answer.

As ranchers, though, we think this moment raises another important question:

Do you actually know where your beef comes from?

There’s More to Knowing Your Food Than Reading a Label

When you pick up a package of beef at the grocery store, you can learn quite a bit from the label.

But there are also questions that package may not be able to answer.

Who raised the animal?

Where did it spend its life?

How was it cared for?

What did it eat?

How was the land underneath that animal managed?

What farming practices were used?

And perhaps most importantly:

Can you talk directly to the person responsible for raising your food?

When you buy directly from a local rancher, the answer can be yes.

Buying Direct Creates Something the Grocery Store Can't: Connection

At Flourish & Roam, we're Sarah and Josh.

We're first-generation ranchers raising cattle and other livestock here in Ohio while using regenerative practices designed to improve the land we're entrusted with.

Our cattle aren't an anonymous commodity to us.

We see the pastures they graze.

We make decisions about their health and care.

We move animals across the landscape.

We think about soil health, forage, animal welfare and the long-term health of the farm.

Our kids are often right there beside us.

And eventually, the food we're raising becomes dinner for our family and yours.

That's why buying directly from a rancher is different.

There is a person standing behind your food.

If you have a question about how our animals are raised, ask us.

If you want to understand why we use a particular farming practice, ask us.

If you're curious about what your cattle ate or how they were cared for, ask us.

We believe those conversations are an important part of rebuilding the connection between the people producing food and the people eating it.

Food Transparency Matters

Our food system has become incredibly complex.

Animals, ingredients and food products can travel through numerous steps before reaching a family's dinner table. And as conversations about domestic beef production and imported beef continue, consumers are understandably paying more attention to where their food originates.

We don't believe the answer to that uncertainty needs to be fear.

We believe it can be connection.

Know your farmer.

Know your rancher.

Ask questions.

Learn how your food is produced.

Then decide which farming practices and food systems you want your family's grocery dollars to support.

Buying Local Beef Supports More Than One Meal

When you purchase beef directly from a rancher, you're obviously buying food.

But those dollars also help keep working farms working.

They help pay for fencing, pasture improvements, livestock care, processing, equipment and the countless other expenses involved in producing food.

They allow farmers and ranchers to continue investing in their land.

And they help create local and regional food systems that give consumers another choice beyond the conventional grocery store.

For us at Flourish & Roam, your purchases allow us to continue investing in regenerative agriculture and building a farm that we hope will leave the soil better than we found it.

That's something we don't take lightly.

But What About the Cost of Buying Local Beef?

We understand this part of the conversation, too.

We're raising a family ourselves.

The grocery budget matters.

Buying directly from a rancher doesn't mean your family needs to eat ribeyes every night or purchase half a cow tomorrow.

Start with the foods you already use.

Ground beef.

Roasts.

Burger patties.

Stew meat.

Sausage.

Chicken.

Build meals around high-quality protein and simple ingredients.

We've shared meals from our own kitchen where we've fed nine people for less than $4 per person using meat from our farm.

Buying better food and feeding a family on a budget don't have to be opposing ideas.

It simply takes some planning — and that's one reason we offer individual cuts, bundles, stock-up options and larger beef shares.

You can find the option that works for your family and your freezer.

Know Your Rancher

There will always be things happening in agriculture that consumers can't control.

Markets change.

Policies change.

Prices change.

Imports and exports change.

But you can decide where you spend your food dollars.

And you can decide how connected you want to be to the people producing your food.

So the next time you're buying beef, consider asking a few more questions.

Where was this animal raised?

How was it raised?

Who raised it?

And if those questions matter to you, find a rancher who is willing to answer them.

If you're in Ohio — or anywhere we ship — we'd be honored to be that rancher for your family.

Know your farm. Know your rancher. Know your food.
